Demo Feedback, Issues and What Happens Next
Hello lovely people!
Thankyou for trying the Waves demo (You have tried it right? If not go here and do so then come back).
The demo has been available for a little over 24 hours now and the feedback so far has been great.
However the Demo has had some issues (one of which I fixed last night as you may see in the post below this one).
If you are having issues then first try the following steps:
- Run the game as administrator. If this solves your problem then let me know in the comments.
- Reboot the computer. Yes I know it sounds obvious but it does solve most problems.
- Install the latest video drivers.
- Redownload the demo, uninstall it and then reinstall it. Sometimes files get corrupt during download or during the install. It’s unlikely but it can happen.
If you still have trouble then you may be suffering from one of the following issues that I hopefully will have fixed later tonight.
If you were having problems with the demo on Windows XP then I urge you to uninstall the game, download the latest version and install it again. All the problems with Windows XP should now be fixed. I am however sorry to say that without making the installer about 200meg larger you will still have to sit through the .NET install process. You can thank Microsoft for this.
- Crashing on Startup - If you are on Windows XP then you need .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 try installing this and see if it fixes it.
In terms of low-framerate issues then I can only recommend that you go into the video settings and turn off Distortion, Ambient Occlusion and Bloom and reduce the resolution. It won’t look as pretty but if you are struggling to hit 30fps this should help. If you turn all of these off and you still have problems then I’m sorry but your graphics card just isn’t powerful enough to run the game properly and there is nothing I can do about that.
For the record I developed the game on a Geforce GTS250 and it runs at 60fps with no problem with everything on. It runs at 30fps on my laptop with an ATI 5470 which if you look at this chart is actually pretty rubbish. Anything better than the 5470 shouldn’t be having any problems at all.
I hope everybody is enjoying the demo and if you are having any issues that I’ve not covered here then let me know in the comments. Part of the reason for the demo release is to find these problems so I can make sure they don’t happen in the full game so thankyou for your patience if you are having issues.
Of course if you aren’t having issues and want to tell me how great everything is then you can comment too 😉

Crashing After the UDK EULA – …. so the first time you run the game yo may need to run it as administrator. Let me know in the comments if this solves the problem if you are having it.
For me it didn’t solve the problem. It still crashes after the UDK EULA appeared.

Does it give you any messages when it crashes? Can you find the launch.log file in Waves Demo/UDKGame/Logs/ and email it to rob[at]squidinabox[dot]com please.

Hi Rob,
with the latest version of the demo I had no problem and was able to play the game.
Like Geometry wars the game shows me that I’m getting old and too slow for high highscores 🙂
But it’s definitly fun!

Sometimes the announcer robot lady stops announcing when bombs are ready. Once I die, she starts again randomly. I also think it would be easier to hear if the bomb-ready alert was just a noise you could easily identify like a bong or ping or something.

There is a high pitched beeping that plays whenever you can use a bomb as well as the announcer. The announcer can interrupt herself if something more important happens such as when you die.

I don’t think I’ve heard this high pitched beeping noise in the demo once. Its dead quiet and I see myself turn red and the bomb works. As far as the announcer, I can go for a good 30 seconds of nothing occurring and she doesn’t announce the bomb. She announces buffer just fine though.

It’s definitely there. You may need to turn down the music and turn up the effects to hear it but I just tested the demo build and the beeping is indeed playing.
It is possible that if you have a really dodgy sound card then the game may be running out of audio channels to play sounds on so it has to recycle some that are still playing in order to play new sounds. I tried to minimise this as much as I could but it might happen on very old/cheap sound hardware.

The only way I can recreate anything remotely similar to what your describing is to force my max audio channels down to 8 from 32 at which point audio will start to noticeably cut out during intense action.
EDIT: I can’t reproduce this on my hardware at all. Try downloading the demo again (There has been another update tonight) and uninstalling then reinstalling. If it still does it then I need to know everything about your audio hardware including make, drivers, setup (stereo, 2.1, quadrophonic, 5.1 7.1 etc) and even what you have the volume set at in the settings. Without more information I can’t help you.

I hear it now. I had to turn down the music and bump the effects. Its still pretty quiet when theres a lot of action going on which is probably why I was able to hear everything else fine except that beep beep beep. My sound card definitely isn’t that old. Its an Asus Xonar running on an i7 940 Asus P6T.

OK so long as it isn’t a bug that’s fine. I’ll make a note to push it higher in the mix for the full game.

Oh snap, I messed up the link, sorry about that. Can you delete my previous post ? I’ll just copy/paste everything here.
Thanks !
I was surprised after the timer to see a seven million number, my previous best was around 3,8 and before that usualy in the 2 million-ish so yeah, I’m quite surprised !
I never used the wuss button thinking it was really a wussy feature, but I had an epiphany with my first bomb used with it. Now I understand a bit better how it works, and it’s very cool 🙂

Dont know where i should report this bug but here seemed reasonable enough. You can get the game to run multile loops of audio (and game spawns at that). Heres how to replicate on the released demo version.
1: Start Game > 2: Purposefully run into an enemu and die > 3: Restart the match > 4: Pause before game starts and spam the restart button several times > 5: The game shouldnt restart yet since the game hasn’t started a new match wait until the game just starts and your character spawns > 6: Spam restart again and play the resulting craziness 🙂
Nonetheless thanks for the fun game and i hope this helps make the game better :).
If I missed a step I’ll update after i test this again.

on a side note it may take several attempts to successfully get the glitch to occur (it takes me 2-4 attempts each time i replicate it).

Thanks for this I’ve fixed this for the full game.
